On January 21, 1903 there was produced on Broadway the musical fantasy that came to be known as the perennial children’s favorite, ‘The Wizard of Oz.’ In BABES IN TOYLAND, Victor Herbert and his librettist Glen McDonough made a studied attempt to write another ‘Wizard’ and capitalize on its giant success. They hit on the idea of using Toyland as a setting. Though imitations are faded copies of the original and soon forgotten, this story turned out to be a triumph in its own right, and a childhood classic in the company of ‘Peter Pan.’
Alan (Zach Parker) and his sister, Jane (Emily Kershaw) run away from their evil Uncle Barnaby (Dave Dumpert) and meet up with a variety of Mother Goose characters including Contrary Mary (Arin Beatty) and Tom-Tom the Piper’s Son (Alex Kidder). They survive a shipwreck and travel to far off lands including the famous ‘Toyland’ where they encounter the mean toymaker (Michelle Bruski-Dumpert) and are treated to a Christmas spectacular. The cast includes: Michelle Abad, Leena Adamian, Elisabeth Bishop, Jennifer Buhl, Demetrius Burns, Amanda Davidson, Elisabeth Goodwin, Brianne Gray, Wally Grenquist, Kayla Haley, Lauren Harrahill, Deborah Hawkins, Megan Hoffman, Courtney Hood, Linda Jackley, Brianne Jette, Jon Kidder, Simon Kidder, Kathryn Love, Michael Love, Amanda Marly, Kayla McAfee, Tiffany Myrick, Angela Noakes, Jasmine Palmer, Lisa Purbaugh, Gary Spees, Leah Spitzer, Jerry Vogt and Hillary Winesdorfer.
Working behind the scenes are: Leslie Engelhard, Allison Engelhard, Dale Borer, Karen Borer, Carolyn Huebel, Kalen Spees and Melanie Spees.
Director Ken Kidder is joined by producer Cindy Littlefield, musical director Kim Enloe and choreographers Anna & Chris Acker. The set was designed by Jerry Vogt, Patrick Mace and Joan Kidder. Gary Spees designed the lights, Patrick Mace and Joan Kidder coordinated props. Leah Spitzer is set artist. Kathy Kershaw and Margie Kluth are costume designers. Leslie Engelhard is stage manager.
